LESSON/SKIT

Characters:

Bug Man-ologist and helper - dressed as an exterminator, carrying everything related to bugs - bug net, bug spray, bug catcher, fly swatter, bug zapper, etc.

As the teacher is finishing up the memory verse with the class, Bug Man-ologist and helper interrupt, dragging a long water hose or fireman's hose, don't notice that class is going on, inspecting the room for any sign of spider webs.

Bug Man: We’ll start in this room first.

Helper: Looks like we'll have to hose the place down! I better turn it on full blast!

(Bug Man poses like he’s about to hose the place down, helper starts toward the door, teacher stops them)

Teacher: WAIT! What are you doing? We’re in the middle of class?

Bug Man: Sorry ma’am but we’ve got to wipe out every last spider web on the face of the planet! And the only way to do that is hose down the webs from here to Timbuktu! (turns to helper) Go turn that hose on! Full blast!

Teacher: WAIT! Why do you have to wipe out all the webs?

Bug Man: We have to protect the livelihood of all bugs! They’re flying and crawling around, minding their own business and(really loud) “BAM”! CAUGHT IN A WEB! Ensnared! Tangled! Captured! Seized! Trapped!

Helper: We’re here to set those little tiny captives free!

Teacher: That’s interesting that you’re trying to set the captives free. We’re actually talking about that today.

Bug Man & Helper: (look at each other and yell) THEY’RE ON OUR SIDE!

Teacher: Well, we aren’t exactly talking about setting bugs free. We're talking about how Jesus came to set us free.

Bug Man: Free from what?

Teacher: From being poor, from broken hearts, from sin, from sickness, from fear. You name it – He set us free from it!

Jesus said in Luke 4:18 that… “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed.

Jesus gave His life to purchase freedom for everyone.  From everything the devil wanted to ensnare us with.

Bug Man: Ensnared! Just like a web!

Teacher: That’s right! But we have been set free!

Bug Man: Sure glad we stopped by but now we’ve got some more setting free to do ourselves! Sure you don’t want us to hose the place down before we go? (crouches back in a stance to start hosing)

Teacher: No, I think we’re good. But thanks anyway! (after they leave) Boy, that was close, wasn't it!

SERMON

Teacher: In the Old Testament, the time before Jesus was born, people had to go to the priest once a year to have their sins covered by the blood from sacrificed animals. But that wasn’t God’s best. God wanted their sins to be forgiven. Not just covered up. He wanted them to be forgotten and never remembered again.

Hebrews 9:11:15 (NIRV)  The Blood of Christ

11 But Christ came to be the high priest of the good things already here now. When he came, he went through the greater and more perfect holy tent. This tent was not made with human hands. In other words, it is not a part of this creation.

12 He did not enter by spilling the blood of goats and calves. He entered the Most Holy Room by spilling his own blood. He did it once and for all time. In this way, he paid the price to set us free from sin forever.

13 The blood of goats and bulls is sprinkled on people. So are the ashes of a young cow. They are sprinkled on people the law called “unclean.” The people are sprinkled to make them holy. That makes them “clean” on the outside.

14 But Christ offered himself to God without any flaw. He did this through the power of the eternal Holy Spirit. So how much cleaner will the blood of Christ make us! It washes away our feelings of guilt for committing sin.  Sin always leads to death. But now we can serve the living God.

Teacher: The blood of animals only made them clean on the outside. But the Blood of Jesus makes us clean on the inside - cleans our hearts and even our minds from feeling guilty from our sins.

15 That’s why Christ is the go-between of a new covenant. Now those God calls to himself will receive the eternal gift he promised. They will receive it now that Christ has died to save them. He died to set them free from the sins they committed under the first covenant.

Teacher: Jesus loves us so much that He gave His life so that we can be free from sin. Hebrews 10:17 says:

“I will not remember their sins anymore. I will not remember the evil things they have done.”

Altar call for salvation

Teacher: Jesus said in Luke 4:18:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed.

Jesus gave His life to purchase freedom for everyone - from everything the devil tries to bring or do.

Altar call for any needs they have.
